Subnets and SubNOTs
In a previous network topology, we used a single subnet (10.1.0.0/16) but used the third octet as a logical divisor, for example, “10.1.3.0/24” were computers, but weren't actually a subnet and were configured as a /16. When the network was upgraded to managed switches with VLAN support, the muscle memory of these logical partitions was to be preserved. To support this, actual subnets were required to be reflected in the 2nd octet, and the third octet became a logical separator we refer to as a “subNOT.”
Below are the actual subnets in the house:
2nd Octet | Description |
---|---|
1 | Default |
2 | Home Servers |
3 | Minecraft Servers |
4 | User Devices |
5 | Vendor and Appliances |
6 | Wireguard VPN |
7 | Storage Area Network |
10 | Proxmox Cluster Communication |
99 | Network |
Below are the logical subNOTs in the house:
3rd Octet | Description |
---|---|
1 | Networking |
2 | Servers |
3 | Computers |
4 | Printers |
5 | Phones and Tablets |
6 | Kids |
7 | Games |
8 | Multimedia |
9 | Internet of Things |
10 | Misc |
100 | DHCP/Guests |
That means the resulting subnets with actual clients are the following:
